Back2Business: The Role CPTED Plays in Helping Small Businesses Thrive
On June 18, 2026, the US CPTED Association hosted a webinar titled “Back2Business: The Role CPTED Plays in Helping Small Businesses Thrive,” presented by Mark Solomon, CPD, President of the Washington State Crime Prevention Association and Crime Prevention Coordinator with the Seattle Police Department.
During the webinar, Mark shared how the City of Seattle is utilizing CPTED principles through its Back2Business program to support small businesses impacted by crime and disorder. The presentation focused on two key initiatives: the Storefront Repair Fund, which helps businesses recover from vandalism and property damage, and the Storefront Security Fund, which provides reimbursement for proactive security improvements designed to prevent future incidents.
Mark discussed how CPTED assessments play a critical role in helping businesses identify practical security enhancements, including improved lighting, security film, access control measures, landscaping improvements, and increased visibility. He emphasized that many of the most effective CPTED strategies are often simple, cost-effective improvements that can significantly enhance both safety and customer experience.
The webinar also explored how Seattle is expanding these efforts beyond individual businesses and applying CPTED principles at the neighborhood level through targeted district investment strategies. By combining crime data, community partnerships, and environmental design improvements, the city is working to create safer and more vibrant commercial districts.
One of the key takeaways from the presentation was the importance of proactive investment in safety. Rather than simply responding to crime after it occurs, CPTED provides communities and business owners with practical tools to reduce opportunities for crime while creating more welcoming environments for customers, employees, and residents.
We would like to thank Mark for sharing his experience and providing valuable insight into how CPTED can support small businesses and strengthen local economies.
