Differences in Actual and Perceived Crime among Residents of Milwaukee’s Near West Side
Erin Horkavi is an Information Systems and Business Analytics major and a Data Science Master’s student at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her research compares crime data with community surveys to identify where perceptions of crime differ from actual crime statistics. She used data related to safety, health, commercial corridors, and housing to better understand the factors shaping both crime and perceptions of crime within the community. Her work aligned the Marquette University Police Department, Milwaukee Police Department, Near West Side Partners, and Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin. She conducted this analysis under the guidance of Dr. Walter Bialkowski (MU) and Dr. Constance Kostelac (MCW).
